Airalo eSIM: plans, prices and limits

Airalo sells local, regional, and global travel eSIMs, with fixed-data packages and unlimited plans priced by trip length. You can buy, manage, and top up through its app. The main choice is how much data you need and how long you need it to last.

The main catch is speed: Airalo's unlimited plans do not provide unlimited high-speed data. You get a daily allowance before the connection slows down. Our price table shows the destination differences; the summary below explains the patterns and limits that matter before you buy.

What Airalo sells

Airalo describes itself as a marketplace for connectivity services. It advertises local, regional, and global coverage across 200+ locations. Local plans cover a destination, while regional options include Europe, Asia, and Latin America for trips across borders.

You can choose a fixed data amount or an unlimited package with a set validity period. Airalo's Mexico options illustrate the difference: it lists 3 GB for 7 days at US$12.50, alongside unlimited data for 7 days at US$23.50.

Airalo says a fixed-data package lasts for its stated validity period unless you consume the allowance sooner. Unlimited packages remove the fixed total data cap, but keep a daily high-speed threshold. That distinction matters more than the unlimited label.

Prices on the destinations we track

Airalo's unlimited packages in our price table run from 3 days to 30 days, checked Oct 2026. Short-trip prices cluster closely across many destinations, but Canada is noticeably more expensive. Airalo lists unlimited data for 3 days at US$9.50 in Thailand, US$11.50 in Japan, and US$19.00 in Canada.

The spread is wider for longer stays. Airalo lists unlimited data for 30 days at US$49.00 in Thailand, US$59.00 in France, and US$86.00 in Canada. Compare the destination and validity together rather than treating Airalo as having a single price level.

Regional coverage can cost more than a local package. Airalo lists Europe unlimited data for 7 days at US$27.00, compared with Italy unlimited data for 7 days at US$23.00. Pick regional coverage if its included destinations fit your route, not only because it covers a wider area.

Fixed data can reduce the upfront cost if you do not need unlimited usage. Airalo lists Mexico's 5 GB package for 15 days at US$17.50, compared with unlimited data for 15 days at US$43.00. Airalo's terms say displayed prices include applicable VAT, GST, or similar tax.

Fair use, speed and hotspot

Airalo's unlimited-package page lists a high-speed allowance of 3 GB per day at 20 Mbps. Its fair-use policy says speeds drop to 1 Mbps after you exceed 3 GB. The allowance resets every 24 hours from activation, rather than at a stated calendar-day boundary.

Airalo says unlimited plans support 5G where available and supported by your device. That does not remove the daily threshold. Its network partners may also reduce speeds during busy periods, separately from the fair-use slowdown.

Airalo allows personal hotspot use on unlimited plans, with no limit on tethering or the number of connected devices. The package is for personal, non-commercial use. Sharing does not remove the daily speed limit, and Airalo warns that hotspot use increases data consumption.

For hotspot setup, Airalo's help page says your device and network must support the feature. If the installation details require a manually entered APN, you also need to enter it for the hotspot.

App, setup and support

Airalo's app lets you purchase, manage, and top up eSIMs. Airalo lists app availability in 53 languages and offers multiple currencies. It also says you can renew or top up an unlimited plan if you need more days.

Before buying, Airalo tells you to check that your phone is eSIM-compatible and network-unlocked. Its setup instructions follow this order:

  1. Open the Airalo app or website, choose your destination and package, and complete the purchase.
  2. Install the eSIM through the app, a QR code, or manual instructions while you have a strong Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Set the eSIM as your mobile data line and enable data roaming.
  4. Connect to the supported network at your destination. Airalo says most eSIMs activate at this point, starting the validity period.

Who Airalo suits

Airalo suits you if you want a broad choice of destinations and an app for managing purchases and top-ups. Its regional options are worth considering for a multi-country trip. Fixed-data packages give you a lower-cost option when a defined allowance fits your use.

Its unlimited plans suit you if continued access matters more than maintaining high speed throughout the day. They are a less suitable choice if you need sustained high-speed use beyond Airalo's daily allowance. Hotspot support is useful, but the slowdown still applies.

Airalo offers 24/7 multilingual support through in-app chat and WhatsApp. Keep refund restrictions in mind before buying: its help page says refunds for 'Wrong purchase' and 'Plans changed' are available only as Airmoney, its in-app currency, rather than money returned to your payment method.

Questions travelers ask

Is Airalo unlimited data really unlimited?

Airalo's unlimited plans have no fixed total data cap, but speed is limited. Airalo lists 3 GB of daily high-speed data at 20 Mbps, followed by 1 Mbps after you exceed the allowance. The allowance resets every 24 hours from activation.

Can I use a hotspot with Airalo?

Yes. Airalo's unlimited-plan policy allows personal hotspot use without a tethering or connected-device limit. Your device and network must support hotspot use, and some packages require a manual hotspot APN setting.

When does my Airalo plan start?

Airalo says validity starts when the eSIM activates. Most eSIMs activate when the installed eSIM connects to a supported network at the destination.

Can I get an Airalo refund if my eSIM does not work?

Airalo lets you request a refund from 'My eSIMs': select your package, then look for 'Request Refund' in 'Package History'. The button appears only for eligible orders; expired or fully used eSIMs are not eligible. For installation issues or an eSIM that does not work, its help page offers Airmoney or a credit to your original payment method.
