Italy eSIM plans compared

Pick your Italy eSIM by allowance, validity and route, rather than the headline starting price. Our price table compares Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim and Ubigi, checked Oct 2026. A low entry price, a low cost per GB and an unlimited allowance answer different needs.

If you stay in Italy, start with the Italy plans. If your trip crosses borders, compare a regional Europe plan and check its country coverage before buying. Read the unlimited and hotspot terms too: an unlimited allowance does not mean unrestricted speed or sharing.

Fair-use notes, quoted from provider pages

  • Holafly: "In rare cases, yes. Network operators use an international measure called the Fair Usage Policy. This is temporarily applied for no more than one (1) day to manage network traffic, ensuring an optimal connection for all users. While this is external to Holafly, there’s no need to worry! If your speed is reduced, the restriction will reset the following day, restoring your plan’s original speed." source
  • Saily: "Unlimited plan includes:" source
  • Saily: "5GB/Day without a speed limit" source
  • Yesim: "Data speed may be limited in accordance with the network operator's Fair Usage Policy" source
  • Yesim: "While such a data plan offers unlimited high-speed data usage, you should be aware that your data speed will not always be at its maximum. To prevent network congestion, most mobile service providers implement a daily usage limit. Once this limit has been reached, your data speed will be reduced, or "throttled."" source

Which plan size fits your trip to Italy

Match both the data allowance and the validity to your trip. Yesim lists 1 GB for 30 days at US$3.00, the lowest entry price in our Italy table. Saily lists 1 GB for 7 days at US$3.99. These are small allowances, even though their validity periods differ.

For a larger allowance, compare the total price before focusing on cost per GB. Yesim lists 10 GB for 30 days at US$19.20. Ubigi lists 25 GB for 30 days at US$19.00, or US$0.76 per GB, the lowest cost per GB in our Italy table. Ubigi gives you more data at a lower total price in this comparison, but unused data does not make a larger package more useful to you.

For a trip beyond Italy, Saily's Italy page advertises Europe plans from US$4.99 covering 35 countries. Airalo also points to regional and global packages that include the selected location. Compare the regional package's allowance, validity and destinations with your route; its starting price alone is not enough to compare it with an Italy plan.

Unlimited plans and their limits

Choose unlimited by duration, then read the speed and sharing rules. For 7 days, Airalo lists unlimited data at US$23.00 and Holafly at US$23.90. For 15 days, Saily lists US$43.99, Airalo US$44.00 and Holafly US$44.50. The prices are close; the stated limits deserve more attention than the small price differences.

Saily's unlimited plan includes 5 GB per day without a speed limit, followed by unlimited data at up to 1 Mbps. Saily states that hotspot use has no restrictions or limitations. That makes its daily high-speed allowance a separate question from how much data you can share.

Holafly allows hotspot sharing of 1 GB per day. Its Italy page says a network operator's Fair Usage Policy can temporarily reduce speed in rare cases, for no more than 1 day, with the original speed restored the following day. Holafly's unlimited plans do not offer top-ups.

Yesim says speed may be limited under the network operator's Fair Usage Policy and describes throttling after a daily usage limit. Its hotspot availability depends on the operator. Do not treat the unlimited label as a promise of unrestricted hotspot use.

Networks and coverage

Use the network names on provider pages as another comparison point, alongside price and allowance. The Italy pages name the following networks or network label:

Nomad says network availability and speed can vary by location and time of day; check your plan details.

  • Airalo: Wind Tre.
  • Holafly: Vodafone Italy / WINDTRE.
  • Nomad: Iliad / Vodafone.
  • Yesim: SwitchLess Networks.

Before you fly

Check your phone's eSIM compatibility before buying. The provider pages we checked do not give a phone compatibility list. Then read the installation and activation instructions for the package you choose: installing an eSIM and starting its validity are separate actions in several providers' guidance.

Airalo says you can install in advance with a stable internet connection. Once you are in the coverage area, turn the eSIM on and select it for data. Holafly also allows advance installation and says its plan begins when you arrive and turn on the eSIM.

Nomad allows advance installation but requires activation within 60 days of purchase; after that, the plan automatically activates and its expiry starts. Some Nomad eSIMs require manual activation, so check the installation email. Saily lists a 180-day activation period and automatic activation on arrival, with the eSIM enabled and roaming turned on.

For a regional trip, pay attention to when validity begins. Yesim says validity starts upon connection to a compatible network and advises installing before travel but activating when needed to avoid unwanted data use on multi-destination plans.

If you need more data later, Airalo offers top-ups where available. Nomad offers add-ons that activate when the initial plan expires. Check those options before choosing a smaller allowance.

Questions travelers ask

What is the cheapest Italy eSIM in this comparison?

Yesim's 1 GB plan for 30 days at US$3.00 has the lowest entry price in our Italy table. For cost per GB, Ubigi's 25 GB plan for 30 days at US$19.00 is lowest at US$0.76 per GB. Choose based on the allowance you need, not only the unit price.

How reliable is eSIM coverage in Italy?

Holafly describes its urban coverage as strong but warns that coverage can be weaker or unstable in mountains. It offers 5G where available, alongside 4G and LTE. Nomad says network availability and speed depend on the plan, location and time of day, so check the specific package details.

Can I use an Italy eSIM as a hotspot?

Saily states there are no hotspot restrictions or limitations. Holafly permits sharing 1 GB per day. Yesim says hotspot use depends on the operator. Compare these rules if you need to connect another device.

Does an Italy eSIM include a phone number?

Holafly's Italy eSIM is data-only and does not include a local number for traditional calls or texts. Saily says calls and SMS are available through its phone-number, minutes and text-message plans for Italy. Check that you select those options rather than assuming a data plan includes them.
